It’s his very first time to Italy, and also I surprised him with interrailing tickets. If you have time to spare, you can see Pompeii via the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento.
Sorrento is a good base for the Amalfi Coastline. SITA runs buses that run between Sorrento to Salerno with the bus exchange at Amalfi.
