The microwave is one of the most frequently used appliances in any U.S. kitchen, making it a magnet for splatters, food odors, and sticky grime. A dirty microwave is unhygienic and can affect the taste of your food. Luckily, cleaning it doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. With a few simple steps, you can get your microwave sparkling clean and streak-free quickly and effectively.
Use microwave-safe bowl with water and vinegar/lemon
This method uses steam to loosen hardened food debris.
- Gather Supplies: You’ll need a microwave-safe bowl, water, and either white vinegar or fresh lemon slices/juice. A microfiber cloth is also essential for wiping.
- Prepare Solution: Fill the microwave-safe bowl with about 1 cup of water. Add 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar, or several lemon slices (or a few tablespoons of lemon juice).
- Vinegar: Excellent for cutting through grease and grime.
- Lemon: Works similarly to vinegar but leaves a fresh, pleasant citrus scent.
Steam for 5 minutes to loosen grime
Let the power of steam do the heavy lifting.
- Microwave the Bowl: Place the bowl with the water/vinegar or water/lemon solution inside the microwave.
- Heat on High: Heat on high power for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the water comes to a rolling boil and the microwave window is steamy.
- Let It Sit: Do not open the door immediately. Let the bowl sit inside the closed microwave for another 5 minutes. The steam trapped inside will continue to loosen dried-on food particles, making them easy to wipe away.
Wipe interior & door with microfiber cloth
Now that the grime is loose, wiping is easy.
- Carefully Remove Bowl: Open the door. Use oven mitts to carefully remove the hot bowl.
- Wipe Interior: Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the entire interior of the microwave. You’ll find that dried food splatters wipe away effortlessly.
- Wipe the Door: Don’t forget the inside of the microwave door, paying attention to the edges and seals where food can accumulate.
- Trouble Spots: For any stubborn spots, dip a corner of your microfiber cloth into the now-cooled vinegar/lemon water from the bowl for extra cleaning power.
Remove and clean turntable separately
The turntable needs a dedicated clean.
- Remove Turntable: Carefully lift out the glass turntable and the roller ring (if applicable).
- Wash Separately: Wash the turntable and roller ring in your sink with warm, soapy water. Use a sponge or brush to remove any stuck-on food.
- Rinse and Dry: Rinse them thoroughly and let them air dry or hand dry them completely before placing them back in the microwave.
Deodorize with baking soda paste
For lingering odors, baking soda is your go-to.
- Make a Paste: If odors persist, mix a small amount of baking soda with water to create a thick paste.
- Apply to Odor Spots: Apply the paste directly to any areas with persistent smells or stains.
- Let Sit: Let the paste sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Wipe Away: Wipe away with a damp cloth. You can also leave an open bowl of baking soda in the microwave overnight to absorb odors.
Clean exterior & vent with damp cloth
Don’t forget the outside!
- Wipe Exterior: Use a damp microfiber cloth with a mild all-purpose cleaner or just warm soapy water to wipe down the exterior surfaces of the microwave.
- Door Handle: Pay attention to the door handle, which can accumulate grime and fingerprints.
- Top Vent (if applicable): For microwaves with an overhead exhaust fan, wipe down the vent area. Some models have a removable vent filter that may need to be cleaned or replaced periodically (check your owner’s manual).
- Dry: Finish by drying the exterior with a clean, dry microfiber cloth for a streak-free shine.
Tips: Regular wipe-downs to prevent buildup
- Daily Wipes: A quick wipe-down of the interior after each use can prevent food from drying and hardening, making deep cleaning much easier.
- Cover Food: Always use a microwave-safe cover or paper towel to prevent splatters when heating food.
- Deep Clean Frequency: Aim for a deep clean every 1-2 weeks, or more often if you use your microwave frequently.
